The Mix Blog Vol. 1

So, mix tapes have officially gone to way of the 8-track, and now with Itunes, Ipods, and all the other I-cessories of the computer age, the mix CD has all but faded away too. So, I'm trying something new here. The blog... digital... download... mix... Okay, I need a more clever, catchier name, I realize, but it's still a work in progress, an experiment. Think of it as a spiritual successor to Jock Jams. And this is for the whole world to listen to - or at least whoever happens to stumble upon my blog. Recently, I've been trying to go out of my comfort zone a bit when it comes to the music I listen to and these are some new bands/musicians I've recently "discovered" whether from recommendations or just from stumbling across them by accident. There isn't a theme to this first mix really, other than that they're songs I've been listening to a lot lately and now they're all yours too. Just right click, save as each. Then leave a comment and let me know what ya think.

1. Keane - A Bad Dream
2. Band of Horses - No One's Gonna Love You
3. Modest Mouse - Float On
4. The Appleseed Cast - Here We Are (Family in the Hallways)
5. Band of Horses - Is There a Ghost
6. Band of Horses - The General Specific
7. Sufjan Stevens - Concerning the UFO Sighting Near Highland, Illinois
8. John Mayer - The Heart of Life
9. The White Stripes - Conquest
10. Arctic Monkeys - Flourescent Adolescent

Rob: The making of a great compilation tape, like breaking up, is hard to do and takes ages longer than it might seem. You gotta kick off with a killer, to grab attention. Then you got to take it up a notch, but you don't wanna blow your wad, so then you got to cool it off a notch.

Random Ramblings Vol. 4,674

So, did anyone actually check out The Mix Blog Vol. 1? Just curious if it was worth my time or not and if a Vol. 2 is in order.

Not a whole lot going on in my life that is exciting enough to blog about really. Don't get me wrong, it excites me, but I think some of the excitement would be lost in translation. It's the semester break and my waitering days are over until late-March or early-April when the hotel opens back up. Feels pretty good, although I feel like a bum waking up at 11 AM every morning the past week and a half. Granted, I haven't been getting to bed before 3 AM, so I guess it evens out, but I still feel like a waste of space waking up so late. Gotta live it up though, eh?

Samuel and Andy came home for about a week and Sam's Christmas bash went smoothly. Quite a few people showed up, even far more than last year, including a good buddy of mine from when I went down to school in Florida. Drove all the way from Philly to attend the shindig. We should have given him a plaque. The Awards worked out a lot better than I ever imagined they would too. I set up my computer to a projector Sam was able to acquire for the awards presentation, brought my computer's surround sound speakers for plugging in the microphone, and Sam did the honors of hosting the "ceremony." If you know my friend Levi, you know he isn't much for public speaking, especially when there are fifty-some people staring just at him, but he did a hilariously great job for his speech when he won the "Dirty Hairy" award.
There were plenty of great speeches, but my favorite of the night had to be Marcus's acceptance speech for "Most Likely to Sellout for a Tampon Commercial." Being in Boston at the time of the party, he sent in a pre-recorded video. When I came up to play his acceptance video, I said into the mic, "We have Marcus live via satellite... hello, Marcus... can you hear me?" The funniest part, which I found out later, was that there was a group of a few girls that were completely amazed by this, saying, "Oh my gosh, how did they do that?!?" Sheesh, kids!

As far as the trip I was planning to take for some much-needed R&R, it's ending up being somewhere far away from my original plans. Tomorrow morning actually, I'm headed to Washington, D.C. for three nights with Matt, my roommate. Which is totally cool with me, since I've been wanting to go there for a while anyway, not having been there since I was twelve. And most everything there to see is free, which is a perk for a dude that doesn't need to blow anymore money lately. I was originally set to go to either Long Beach, CA or New York City, both where I had places lined up to stay and plane tickets picked out, but Matt asked me to go to D.C., so I figured sure, sure... why the hey not? It'd be better to go to either the LBC or NYC for spring break when it's warmer and can be more enjoyable anyway.

When I get back, look out for the Second Annual Burdcademy Awards. Should be rad.

Now, here's Marcus's live satelleite feed for the world to enjoy:
